What are your favorite kinds of board games? I love braille monopoly. I haven't found very many accessible board games so that's my only favorite for now. Thoughts?
Out of the already-accessible ones, my favorite is Scrabble. There is also a similar one to that called Upwards, that I also like playing. I think it'd be cool to have more board games accessible though because there are lots of others that sound interesting to play. I know there are many more computer games that are accessible, but I like actually holding the game pieces in my hands and playing with others in person; I've tried playing some games (like Monopoly) on the computer, and I just couldn't get as into it as when I'm physically playing the same game. Actually, I wouldn't mind buying the regular print game and adapting and labeling them myself, it's just a matter of getting a sighted person to read all the stuff in the game to me so I can do that.
mine's monopoly for sure. love it
I've allways thought Clue was cool and when I was little I liked Mousetrap and Candy Land. It would've been cool if they were accessible.
I bet they could be brailled. When I was younger, and had more time on my hands for board games, a sighted friend of mine, who knew braille, addapted the games for me. Sometimes she would have to modify the rules to make them work. I also enjoy Upwards and scrabble, also Wise and Otherwise, malarky, Bonkers, what's yours like, and balderdash. All these games are word games, and easily adaptable and fun.
i like candy land. that was my faverete one growing up. but i like any game.
i like monopoly, snakes and ladders, frustration, and life. :)
I like to play moplopy to.
It is a good game to play.
Haven't played that game for a long time dance I went to middle school.
i like hungry hungery hippole. that game was cool. also like playing card games like go fish. and harts. and woare. as well.
I love all the group word games like Scatagories, Outburst, Taboo, Say Anything, etc. They could all be made accessible but who has time to do that? lol
I wish more of the popular current games were accessible. We got my son the Diary of a Wempy Kid game for Christmas but can't play it with him since we're both blind.
Of course Braille Monopoly and Scrabble are fun.
I saw outburst somewhere but it didn't seem very interesting, since it seemed similar to Scategories. Also an apples to apples fan.
I wonder what can be done with modern strategy games such as Twilight Imperium, Pandemic, Ticket to ride, etc.
What's frustration?
Matthew
yeah, probably milbornes, apples to apples, scrabble, trouble, occasionally monopoly. rummy cube.
oh... hungery hippos is fun!
and tumbling monkeys.... same sort of thing but with monkeys and the theme of a jungle. lol
If your into games such as Hungry Hippos, you'l enjoy Hungry Henry.
There's a pelican on a stand who tips back and forward, and you need to feed him plastic fish and other items. The object is to see how many items of food you can feed him, before he tips over.
I looked a bit further into Ticket to ride, and discovered that they have developed multiple Iphone apps. Alas, the apps are completely inaccessible.
Origin of expressions, which I think I've written about earlier, can be made accessible if a sighted friend reads the card to you, without reading the ending, so you can make up your own, and then all the endings to the expressions can be read at the end of the round. The same goes for Malarky, since besides question-reading, the leader can count the number of votes for each answer out loud.
I wish Catch Phrase was accessible. That's not exactly a board game, but since word games were mentioned, I thought I'd throw that one in there.
Freeze Up, similar in concept to Catch Phrase, is completely accessible. You're given a letter and a clue and you must think of as many words that start with that letter and are in the given category as possible before time runs out. It's great for group activities and is self-voicing, no brailing required.
Scrabble is probably my favorite, followed by Monopoly. We made Scategories accessible, and that's always a hit!
Taboo isn't that bad... if I am the one giving the clues, another player will tell me the word and the words I can't say. We tip the egg timer on its side and that stops the time so I can play as quickly as everyone else.
We have a game called Five Second rule... where you have to name three things in five seconds... there are too many cards to make accessible, btu I am good at guessing.
Nice, where can you get Freeze Up? Is it a specialized game, or is it just one of those games that happen to be accessible out of the box?
Freeze up is accessible out of the box, and can be purchased from Amazon for about 20 dollars.
Therapy is also fun, though its sources are a bit outdated, it contains psychology-related trivia questions which you need to answer. Wit's end is fun, it's a combination of brain-teasers word-scrambling and trivia and could be made accessible, if the card text was put onto braille paper.
I love Chess, Connect 4, checkers, talking battleship, and crockadile dentist.
I'm not much of a board game fan, but I do enjoy Monopoly. I also enjoy Chess (in fact I have the braille set you get when you take the Hadley courses), though I'm not very good at the game.
I love chess, like Monopoly and Scrabble a great deal, and although it's not a true board game I also like Battleship...or rather, I used to, and haven't played it in fifteen years or so.
